Non-Binding Estimate
A non-binding estimate is an estimated cost for your move, based on the estimated weight of your belongings and the services requested. Unlike a binding estimate, this type of estimate is not guaranteed, so the final price may increase or decrease depending on exactly what will be moved, as well as time and labour costs.
What the Estimate is Based On
- A visual or verbal review of the items to be moved.
- The experience of the moving company in estimating weight or volume.
- Services requested (e.g., packing, disassembly, storage).
- Conditions at the pickup and delivery locations.
What You Need to Know
- The final cost will reflect the actual weight, time and services on the day of the move.
- If you add items, need extra help or the move takes longer than expected, the price may increase.
- If you have fewer items than expected or the move will be more efficient, the price may decrease.
- Usually, moving companies are required to explain how optional estimates work and let you know that the final bill may vary.
Best For
- Local moves or small jobs where inventory can still change.
- Customers who need an approximate figure rather than a fixed price.
- Situations where flexibility wouldn’t hurt and an exact cost is not critical.
Example
You receive a no-obligation estimate for $1,200 for a 1-bedroom flat. On moving day, the movers discover that you’ve added a pantry and need help packing. The final cost increases to $1,550 because of the extra labour and volume. If instead you had less stuff than expected, the final bill could have been lower than the estimate.
