Moving Insurance
Moving insurance protects your belongings beyond the basic cover that is included in most moving services. Insurance can be carried either by us or a third-party company and is a sensible option for those moving expensive or fragile items.
What’s Included in Basic Coverage?
By law, most moving companies must include a basic valuation (like Released Value Protection in the U.S. or similar in Canada).
This covers items based on weight, not actual value. Typically, you’re reimbursed at a flat rate per pound — which might not be enough for expensive items.
Types of Moving Insurance
Full Value Protection (offered by movers):
- Covers the full replacement or repair cost of damaged or lost items.
- Usually costs more than basic coverage, but provides much stronger protection.
Third-Party Moving Insurance:
- Offered by insurance companies separate from the mover.
- Can provide broader or more specialized coverage (e.g., for artwork, jewelry).
Pro Tip:
- Check What’s Covered: Moving insurance has limitations (like pre-existing damage or certain types of items). Read the policy carefully to understand what’s included.
- If you’re moving especially valuable items, consider photographing them before the move as extra documentation.
