Valuation Coverage
This is the level of liability the moving company has for your belongings in the event of damage or loss. It’s not moving insurance, but it does offer some protection based on the weight or value of your belongings.
Two Common Types of Moving Valuation Coverage
Released Value Protection (Basic Coverage)
- Included at no extra cost.
- Offers minimal reimbursement: typically $0.60 per pound per item.
- Best for customers moving low-value or replaceable items.
Example: A lost 10 lb lamp would be reimbursed at $6.
Full Value Protection (Upgraded Coverage)
Available for an additional fee, based on total item value. The mover is responsible for one of the following:
- Repair the item.
- Replace it with a similar item.
- Pay you the current market value.
- Usually comes with deductible options and limits for high-value items.
Important Notes for Customers
- Valuation coverage is not third-party insurance during the moving. It’s a mover’s internal liability commitment, and doesn’t cover everything.
- If you pack your own items and they’re damaged due to poor packing, coverage may not apply.
- High-value items (usually items worth more than $100/lb) must be declared in writing to be fully covered during the moving.
