Alaska is the biggest state in the U. S. and yet it is one of the least populated. Yes, Alaska doesn’t have a state income tax. Yes, it does not have a state sales tax. It even pays people a dividend per year. So why not so many people want to live there? The state is not very comfy in terms of logistics. There are cities that can only be reached by air or ocean. But still, if Alaska is your biggest dream, we will help you find a place that will be a match for you.

What Living in Alaska Actually Costs

The total number of people who live in Alaska is around 740,000, which makes it one of the states with the people per square mile. That affects a lot of things like how much food costs and how easy it is to get medical care. On average people in Alaska spend $62,900 per year on personal things. For groceries people spend around $400 per month.. For healthcare people spend about $13,015 per year.

These numbers are different in cities. So it is very important to understand these differences when you are deciding where to live in Alaska.

Before You Commit

Look into how easy it’s to get to your target city. Some cities in Alaska, like Juneau and Sitka are not connected to the rest of the state by roads. To move your furniture and belongings to these places you have to take a ferry or a plane, which can be very expensive.

Anchorage – Urban Infrastructure With Outdoor Access

Anchorage has a lot of people living there, 290,000 residents, which is about 40% of the whole state’s population. The average household income is around $100,492. The average home value is nearly $390,382. Anchorage has the state’s international airport, big hospitals and lots of employers in healthcare, government and oil industries.

If you are moving from a city on the mainland, Anchorage will feel pretty manageable. There are many roads. There are over 200 parks. You can get to ski resorts quickly.

The downside is that it costs a lot to live in Anchorage. Your utility bills and everyday expenses will be higher than what most people pay in the US. So if you are on a budget Anchorage might not be the best place for you.

Fairbanks – More More Remote

Fairbanks is the second biggest city in Alaska with about 31,500 people living there. The average home price in Fairbanks is near $350,000, which’s about $30,000 less than the average home price in the rest of the state. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is a part of the economy with lots of jobs in education, energy and the military.

The winters in Fairbanks are very harsh. It can be as low as -50°F in January. This is literally freezing. This makes utility bills and daily life more expensive.

Palmer and Wasilla – The Matanuska Valley Option

These two cities are near Anchorage (40-45 minutes by car). Wasilla has a lot of things like stores, schools and quiet neighborhoods but at a lower price than Anchorage. Palmer is more about farms. Many people enjoy it because of its small-town feel and mountain views.

Besides, considering how close they are to Anchorage, they can be an option for you to work in Anchorage and live in Palmer or Wasilla.

Kenai – Quiet Peninsula Living

The Kenai Peninsula is the southwest point of Anchorage. The price of a home in Kenai is around $299,900, which’s pretty affordable compared to other places in Alaska. The community in Kenai is small with 7,800 people living there. Fishing is a part of life in Kenai. It is a place for people who want to live in a quiet area and do not need a lot of city things.

Things Worth Knowing Before You Move

If you are moving from the 48 states to Alaska, you need to know that it is a big move and there are rules to follow. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has rules that moving companies must follow. If you hire a moving company you should make sure they are registered and have insurance to cover your things.

Here are a things to keep in mind:

Most cities in Alaska require you to have a car to get around, because you cannot walk to many places.

Some cities in Alaska are not easy to get to by road, so you should check if a truck can get to your new home before you move.

It can take a long time to get your things shipped to Southeast Alaska, because of the ferry schedules.

If you are moving to Fairbanks or the Mat-Su Valley in the winter, you need to plan it precisely, because it gets very cold and that can cause problems with your move.

Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend is one of the reasons people want to move there. But is it worth it is the real question. Let’s go over costs of living in Alaska and salaries people can get there to see the full picture.

The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend Explained

The PFD started in 1982. It gives Alaska residents a share of the state’s oil money every year. The Alaska Permanent Fund is like a savings account built from oil revenues. Each year some of the money it earns goes to residents.

In 2024 the PFD was $1,702 per person. This included a dividend of $1,403.83 and a special energy relief payment of $298.17. For 2025 the dividend is $1,000. The amount changes every year based on how money the fund earns and how the Legislature decides to distribute it.

For a family of four this could mean getting around $4,000 to $6,800 in a year. That’s money. It’s not a job salary and shouldn’t be thought of that way. The Permanent Fund Dividend is its thing and the money from it can be a nice bonus.

A Plus Moving services will help you make your move smooth. Our team will take care of moving your belongings and free your mind for more important details of the move. Call us today at (800) 919-6332!

Who Qualifies and How to Apply

The PFD is not hard to get, but it’s also not like they are giving it away to anyone who visits Alaska. Check these rules:

You must live in Alaska for the last year

You have to want to stay in Alaska

You cannot be in jail. Have been found guilty of certain crimes during that year

You have to send in your application from January 1 to March 31 of the year, you want to get the Permanent Fund Dividend

You send in your application on the state’s MyPFD website. If you miss the deadline you will not get the Permanent Fund Dividend for that year. There are no chances to get the Permanent Fund Dividend.

What the Permanent Fund Dividend Does Not Cover

Extra cash always sounds great. But when you see the full picture of average spendings in Alaska, it becomes clear – the PFD isn’t much.

Groceries cost 27% more in Alaska. Utilities, like heating, cost 57% more in Alaska because the winters are very cold. Healthcare costs 42% more in big cities like Anchorage.

WARNING

The average person in Alaska spends $62,900 per year, around $50K from this sum is for basic things like food and a house.

So the Permanent Fund Dividend of $1,000 to $1,700, per year is not a lot of money compared to how much things cost in Alaska. The Permanent Fund Dividend only covers a part of the extra cost of living in Alaska.

~25% higher

The Real Financial Picture of Moving to Alaska

Alaska does not have a state income tax. It does not have a state sales tax. This is a deal. For people who earn a lot of money, they can save a lot of money on taxes over time.

Most of the jobs in Alaska are in areas like oil and gas fishing, healthcare, the military and the government. Some jobs in areas pay more money to get people to move there. But the high cost of living in Alaska, especially outside of Anchorage, takes away some of the extra money people earn.

Moving to Alaska also costs a lot of money to relocate. People often do not think about how much it costs. If you are moving from one of the 48 states it is a very long way. Shipping your things by boat or truck takes a lot of time and money.

If you are thinking about moving to Puerto Rico you have probably heard of Act 20 and Act 22. These two laws got a lot of attention when they were passed in 2012. Now Act 60 is the law that is attracting professionals, investors and business owners to the island. The tax benefits are real but there are also rules to follow the IRS will be. You will have to get used to a new way of life.

This guide will tell you what these laws really offer, who can use them and what it takes to move to Puerto Rico.

From Act 20 and Act 22 to Act 60

On January 1, 2020 Act 20 and Act 22 became part of the Puerto Rico Incentives Code 60, which is now called Act 60. Act 20 is also known as the Export Services Act. It helped businesses that provided services to countries by giving them a low tax rate of 4%. These businesses also did not have to pay taxes on the money they made from investments, as well as they could avoid property and municipal taxes.

Act 22, on the other hand, was for investors. It helped them by not making them pay taxes on the money they made from investments that they did not actively work for.

What the Individual Investor Incentive Covers

People who are new to Puerto Rico and live there can get a break on their taxes. Puerto Rico does not charge them taxes on the money they get from things like dividends, interest and selling things for a profit whether they owned them for a time or a long time. This also includes cryptocurrencies and other crypto assets. To get this tax break the person has to live in Puerto Rico and start getting this income after they move there as long as they do this before January 1 2036.

This is important for people from the United States because the US government does not tax the money they get from Puerto Rico. The US government still taxes them on all the other money they get from other places. To avoid paying taxes the money has to really come from Puerto Rico.

Capital Gains From Before the Move

If we are talking about pre-moved gains, it is handled differently. If you sell something and make a profit within ten years of moving to Puerto Rico, you only have to pay the US tax rate on that profit. If you wait until after ten years of living in Puerto Rico. Before January 1, 2036 you only have to pay a flat tax rate of 5% to Puerto Rico.

What Businesses Qualify Under Act 20

To qualify for this a business has to provide services. It must be based in Puerto Rico, but the main income must come from customers outside of the island.

Note

The business that sells things outside of Puerto Rico has to get at least 80% of its money from doing that. If a business makes more than $3 million it might be able to pay a smaller rate of 2% for the first five years. (mcvpr.com)

Residency Requirements – The Part That Trips People Up

This is where many applicants run into problems. Residency is not symbolic.

Applicants must show they are genuine residents of Puerto Rico by spending a significant amount of time on the island and contributing to the community.

Key requirements under Act 60:

Spend at least 183 days per year on the island

Spend fewer than 90 days on the US mainland

Puerto Rico must be your primary residence

Within two years of receiving the grant, the Individual Investor must purchase real property in Puerto Rico for use as their principal residence (mcvpr.com)

Make an annual donation of a minimum of $10,000 to local nonprofit entities – half of which must go to organizations that work to eradicate child poverty (mcvpr.com)

IRS Enforcement Is Real

The IRS has been taking a closer look at people who use Puerto Rico’s tax breaks. They have been taking action against people who do not follow the rules of Act 60. The IRS found over 100 people, including cryptotraders and funds managers, who they think claimed Puerto Rico’s tax incentives illegally.

So, if your main reason for moving to the Puerto Rico is the tax breaks, consult with a lawyer and a tax advisor first.

Quick Comparison: Act 20 vs. Act 22 (Now Under Act 60)

When you move to Puerto Rico from the mainland United States it can feel like you are still in the United States. You do not need a passport to get there. You pay in USD. You can also speak English. The same laws apply.

The process of buying a home in Puerto Rico is different though. In this guide, you’ll get to know the main differences.

How the Process Differs from a Mainland Transaction

Surely, Puerto Rico is a part of the US, but real estate laws are quite different there. They come from a long time ago, when it was a Spanish territory.

In Puerto Rico people do not use a contract when they want to buy a house in Puerto Rico. The person selling the house in Puerto Rico usually gives the buyer of the house some paperwork. However it is up to the buyer of the house to get a lawyer to look at the paperwork before the buyer signs the paperwork. Most of the time the paperwork is like an option to buy the house in Puerto Rico not a purchase agreement for the house.

The way people find houses for sale in Puerto Rico is also different. Many real estate agents in Puerto Rico do not list their houses, so you have to look all over the internet to find them. You have to check a lot of websites, like Clasificados Online, Zillow and the websites of real estate companies that use Stellar MLS, which’s the system that the Puerto Rico Association of Realtors uses to list houses.

Financing: What US Programs Apply

Buyers in Puerto Rico can get help from US-backed mortgage programs. There are types of loans that people can apply for like FHA, VA, USDA and conventional loans.

The amount of money you need to pay upfront is different for each type of loan. For example VA and USDA loans do not require any money down which is really helpful. FHA loans require 3.5% down and conventional loans in Puerto Rico usually require at least 5% down.

If you want to buy a house in Puerto Rico you need to get pre-approved for a loan before you start looking. This is a rule. If you are paying cash for a house you need to show that you have money and you need to provide documents to prove it.

The Legal Closing Process

WARNING:

Closing in Puerto Rico works differently than on the mainland. Buyers who skip independent legal review or assume standard US closing procedures apply often face delays, disputed terms, or unresolved liens. Read this section carefully before signing anything.

In Puerto Rico a notary is actually a lawyer who has a license. This notary does not just sign documents they also prepare the deed. Make sure they are fair to both the buyer and the seller. When people buy or sell property in Puerto Rico they usually do not use a title company. People can buy title insurance, but it is not something that everyone gets.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when planning to buy a property in Puerto Rico. When the buyer and seller agree on a price they both have to be in person to sign the papers. If the buyer is married their husband or wife has to be too.

It is a nice idea to get a CRIM certification, which shows that the property owner has paid all their taxes. You can get this document from the CRIM office. The CRIM office can put a lien on a property if the owner owes taxes and that lien has to be paid before the property can be sold.

When someone buys a property in Puerto Rico they usually have to pay some costs like fees for the notary and for registering the property. These costs are usually around 1.15% to 2.5% of the price of the property. The buyer also usually has to pay a deposit, which’s, like a down payment, when they agree to buy the property. This deposit is usually 5% to 10% of the price of the property.

Cost Item

Typical Range

Buyer closing fees

1.15%–2.5% of purchase price

Down payment (conventional)

5%–20%

Down payment (FHA)

3.5%

Effective property tax rate

~0.39% of assessed value

Buyer deposit after agreement

5%–10%

Puerto Rico property taxes are collected by the CRIM. The value of a property for tax purposes is usually 40 to 50 percent of what you paid for it. Then they take that value. Charge you about 0.39% of it in taxes. You can find this information on thepuertoricorealestate.com. This means that people who own property in Puerto Rico do not have to pay much in taxes as people in most other US states. If you live in your property all the time you can ask the CRIM for a discount of $15,000 on the value of your property, for tax purposes.

Shipping Your Belongings: The Logistics Reality

Moving to Puerto Rico is considered a move within the country. But it is way different from the moving to another state. Your things will travel by boat, which means it will take longer. You will need to do more paperwork and get special insurance.

What to Expect Door to Door

Book a carrier with Puerto Rico ocean experience. Most of the time things get sent from Jacksonville, Florida which is also known as JAXPORT. It takes around three to six days to get from Jacksonville to San Juan by boat. In total it usually takes 7 to 14 business days to get everything from your place to your new place, including packing, getting things through the port and delivering them to your new home.

Prepare a detailed household inventory. Even though you do not have to pay customs duties when you move from the mainland to Puerto Rico your things might still get checked at the port. You might have to pay a special tax on new things. If you are moving used things that you already own, you probably will not have to pay this tax. Your shipping company should help you make a list of your things that’s okay with the rules.

Verify your moving insurance covers ocean transit. The normal insurance for moving your things does not automatically cover things when they are being sent by boat. You should check with your shipping company to make sure you are covered before they load your things.

Coordinate delivery timing with your closing date. You should try to have at least two weeks extra time just in case. If your things arrive before you can get into your place you will have to pay to store them and it will be a hassle.

Confirm last-mile access at the destination. Some places, like cities and areas, with steep hills have narrow roads and it can be hard for big trucks to get there. If you want to avoid issues with that, verify with your moving company if it’s alright and they can get to your place.

Common Risks Worth Knowing

The biggest mistake people make when buying a house is skipping the legal review. This is a problem because if the buyer does not have their own lawyer they have very little protection if there are problems with the terms of the sale.

When you are buying a house in Puerto Rico you need to make sure the home inspection covers everything. This includes the condition of the roof, which’s often flat in Puerto Rico and the cisterns and water systems. You also need to check the panels and the generators to make sure they work well together. After a storm you need to make sure the house is still strong.

The tax incentives from Act 60 are real. You have to really live in Puerto Rico to get them. To qualify you have to spend at least 183 days per year in Puerto Rico, register to vote there, get a Puerto Rico drivers license and show that you do not have strong ties to the mainland anymore. You should work with a certified accountant who knows the laws in both Puerto Rico and the mainland before you make any decisions based on the tax savings you expect.

Summary

To buy a house in Puerto Rico you should start by finding a lawyer. Then, get a pre-approved for a loan. Plan how you will get your things to the island. You should do all of these things before the date you want to close the sale. If you do these three things you can avoid most of the problems that people have when buying a house in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is beautiful. The weather is warm, the cost of living is cheaper then in the mainland, taxes are lower. Seemingly there is nothing that could stop you from moving there. But before you do, think of safety.

Crime in Puerto Rico: The Real Numbers

The number of murders in Puerto Rico is around 15.3 for every 100,000 people as of 2024. The average in the mainland U. S. is 6.5, but the mainland is very large, so is it really compatible?

WARNING:

Crime in Puerto Rico is usually concentrated in specific areas and is often related to drugs. Tourists and homebuyers in residential neighborhoods typically face much lower risk, but it is important to research the specific municipality and street-level safety before purchasing property.

Puerto Ricans consider the eastern part of the island the safest. Your chance of being a victim of crime ranges from 1 in 15 in the northeast part to about 1 in 20 in the eastern part of Puerto Rico.

Where Safety Varies Most

Location really matters. Cities like San Juan and Ponce have areas with higher crime rates. On the other hand, rural communities are usually much safer and have close-knit communities. Areas with lots of tourists like Condado and Isla Verde have heavy police presence.

Here are some practical steps to evaluate a neighborhood before committing:

Review crime maps

Visit during different times of day before signing a lease

Talk to residents or expat communities online

Avoid areas at night especially in unfamiliar urban zones

Keep valuables out of sight in vehicles and on beaches

Natural Disaster Risk

Puerto Rico’s risk profile is different from most U.S. States when it comes to natural disasters. The island is in the Atlantic hurricane belt. The main threat of disaster in Puerto Rico comes from hurricanes, tropical storms and drought. These bring storm surge, rainfall, flooding, landslides and extreme winds.

From 1980 to 2024 there were 8 weather and climate disasters that cost over $1 billion each in Puerto Rico. All of them were cyclone events. Hurricane Maria in 2017 was an example of what a direct hit means for daily life. Recovery from Hurricane Maria is still ongoing. As of June 2023 FEMA gave $23.4 billion in Public Assistance funds for Puerto Rico’s recovery from the 2017 hurricanes and subsequent earthquakes. Rebuilding infrastructure. Power grid reliability is still not consistent, in some parts of the island.

Infrastructure and Daily Life Safety

Everyday safety is also about the things you deal with every morning. The roads in Puerto Rico are not as good as the roads in the United States. People drive differently too. You will probably lose power more often than you do in most states. That is why a lot of people in Puerto Rico have generators.

When it comes to healthcare it is easy to get in the cities.. If you live in a rural area it can be hard to get the medical help you need. Puerto Rico does not have healthcare providers. The government also does not pay doctors much as they do in the states. This makes it hard for hospitals to keep running. If you have a problem that you need to see a doctor about all the time you should think about living close to a big hospital in San Juan or another city.

What This Means for Someone Planning to Move

Puerto Rico is a place where people can live comfortably. The thing about safety is that it is uneven. Some places are safe. Some are not. If you live in an apartment you need to think about what floor you’re on in case there is a big storm. You also need to be ready for things like the power going out.

Before you decide to move to Puerto Rico you should think about things.

You should learn about the area you want to live in, not just look at numbers for the whole island.

You need to think about how much it will cost to be ready for hurricane season like buying a generator and storing water.

You should check if the place you want to rent or buy is in an area that floods.

You need to know that it can take a long time to recover after a big storm, even years.

Puerto Rico is a place that can be a home but you need to be honest with yourself about what it is like to live there.

When you move to Puerto Rico and become a resident your United States drivers license is not valid anymore. You have to apply for a Puerto Rico drivers license through CESCO, which’s like the department of motor vehicles within thirty days of moving to the island.

People who move to Puerto Rico have to get a Puerto Rico drivers license within 30 days of becoming a resident. This guide will explain everything you need to know: who needs to apply for a Puerto Rico drivers license, what to bring with you, how to make an appointment and what to look out for.

Note for Act 60 applicants

If you are applying for Act 60 having a Puerto Rico drivers license will help you. It shows that you really live on the island and it can help you get tax benefits. The government looks at a lot of things to see if you really live on the island and a Puerto Rico drivers license is one of them.

Documents You’ll Need to Bring

Preparing for your CESCO appointment is crucial. If you forget something you’ll have to reschedule.

When applying for a license make sure to have these documents:

Social Security card

ID with your full name

Residential and postal address

Date of birth

Drivers license number if you have one

Birth certificate or a valid US passport

Social Security. A document that shows you’re not eligible for one

Two documents that prove your Puerto Rico address like a utility bill or bank statement

Your drivers license from the mainland

Official driving record from your home state

Completed Application, for Driver License that’s form DTOP-775

Certificate, that’s form DTOP-260

You’ll probably need to give up your US drivers license from your residence. Some people keep an ID card issued by their state as a backup in case mainland ID checkers don’t know about Puerto Rico licenses.

The Medical Certificate

This step usually catches applicants off guard. You can just walk into any CESCO office for a quick check up. The doctor is going to ask you a bunch of questions about your health like how’s your vision. If you are getting a drivers license for the first time, you have to get an eye exam. The cost is usually around $20. You have to pay this in cash to the medical office.

Fees and IRS Stamps

The way Puerto Rico handles payments is really confusing for people when they first do it. By just paying the fees, when you are at the counter, you have to buy stamps from a Colecturía (revenue office).

You will probably have to pay a different fees, such as the written test which is $17, driving test which is also $17, and then you have to buy some Internal Revenue stamps like the 5120 stamp which is $15, the 0842 stamp which is $2, and the REAL ID stamp 2028 which is $17. On top of that you have to pay for a medical exam, which can be anywhere, from $20 to $30.

FEE ITEM

APPROXIMATE COST

Written test (if required)

$17

Driving test (if required)

$17

Internal Revenue stamp (5120)

$15

Internal Revenue stamp (0842)

$2

REAL ID stamp (2028)

$17

Medical exam

$20–$30

REAL ID matters practically. Without it, you cannot use your Puerto Rico license to board domestic flights in the US. The extra $17 stamp is worth it for most people.

How the CESCO Appointment Works

Booking and Arrival

Download the CESCO app on your smartphone. The CESCO app helps with vehicle registration renewal. Tracks fines. You can also book appointments on the CESCO website. The wait time is usually 2 to 4 weeks depending on where you’re the time of year.

Get to your appointment 15 minutes early. Try to fill out the form before you go. With the appointment system the whole process takes an over 2 hours. Most CESCO offices have staff who speak two languages so English speakers rarely have a problem.

After Your Appointment

In Puerto Rico drivers licenses are now valid for 8 years. Expire on your birthday. You will usually get a document on the same day and your physical card will arrive in the mail later.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

If your home state has an agreement with Puerto Rico that lets you use your license there you might not have to take the written test or the driving test to get a license in Puerto Rico. If you have a drivers license from a state that has this kind of agreement with Puerto Rico you can go to the CESCO website to check your papers and ask for an appointment.

If your license has expired for more than 2 years and 30 days, you will have to take a written test that is for the kind of license you want. This is true even if you have a license from a state that has an agreement with Puerto Rico.

Some people pay an expediter to help them with the paperwork at CESCO. This person is like a guide who knows what to do.

If you are moving from the United States mainland to Puerto Rico you will probably hear about the Puerto Rico citizenship certificate sooner than you think. It is a crucial document for people who are moving to Puerto Rico because of the Act 60 tax incentive decrees or for people who have Puerto Rican heritage and want to prove it. The paperwork for the Puerto Rico citizenship certificate is not too hard to handle.

This guide will explain the process of getting the Puerto Rico citizenship certificate step by step, including who qualifies for the Puerto Rico citizenship certificate, what documents you need to apply, how to apply, and the citizenship certificate is actually useful.

What the Puerto Rican Citizenship Certificate Actually Is

Puerto Rico is a place that belongs to the United States and everyone born in Puerto Rico is a US citizen from the moment they are born according to the federal law. The certificate of Puerto Rican citizenship is not like having two nationalities at the same time.

What this certificate does is say that you are a citizen of Puerto Rico under the laws of Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico State Department has been giving out these certificates since 2007 after the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico recognized Puerto Rican citizenship as existing within the context of US nationality (Miriam J. Ramirez de Ferrer v. Juan Mari Brás, 144 DPR 141, 1997). The certificate is given out by the Puerto Rico Department of State and is backed by Puerto Rico’s Political Code.

Now let’s talk about what this document cannot do. It does not mean anything under the laws of the United States. It does not affect how tax you pay, your Social Security, voting eligibility, or your status as an immigrant. Having this certificate does not make you more of a US citizen or less of a US citizen. It is a document that is only used in Puerto Rico. Do not get it mixed up with a certificate of citizenship which is a different document that is used to prove you are a US citizen if you got it through your parents or, by becoming a naturalized citizen.

At a Glance: What This Certificate Is Actually Used For

Spanish citizenship applications. Puerto Rico’s status as an Ibero-American territory allows holders of this certificate to apply for Spanish citizenship under a two-year residency track, rather than the standard ten-year requirement, under Spain’s Organic Law 4/2000 and Royal Decree 557/2011.

Act 60 bona fide residency documentation. For mainland Americans who have relocated to Puerto Rico under Act 60 individual investor decrees, this certificate can serve as supporting evidence in the “closer connection” residency test during annual compliance reviews.

Who Qualifies

The Puerto Rico Department of State has three paths for people to be eligible. It is very important to know which one is for you, as it decides what papers you need and if you can apply now or have to wait.

Born in Puerto Rico. You qualify to apply right away, if you were born on the island and your parents were subject to the laws of Puerto Rico no matter where you live now.

Born outside Puerto Rico with at least one Puerto Rican parent. You have to be a US citizen and have at least one parent who was born in Puerto Rico. You do not have to live in Puerto Rico for an amount of time to qualify under this rule.

Resided in Puerto Rico for at least one year. This is the rule that applies to people from the mainland United States who have recently moved to the island. You have to have lived in Puerto Rico for a year before you can send in your application. The time you start living in Puerto Rico is when the clock starts. It keeps going even if you go back to the mainland for a while.

Important:

You do not need a certificate to live work or do business in Puerto Rico. It does not help you comply with Act 60 faster. If you apply before you have lived in Puerto Rico for one year your application will be rejected. Also remember that no one can promise that your application will be approved. The Puerto Rico Department of State is the one that decides.

Documents You’ll Need

The required documents vary depending on your eligibility category.

If You Were Born in Puerto Rico

The process is relatively simple. You will need:

A completed application form (available from the Puerto Rico Department of State)

Your original Puerto Rican birth certificate – note that only birth certificates issued on or after July 1, 2010 are accepted, as earlier versions were invalidated under Puerto Rican law to prevent fraud

A valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport)

Internal revenue stamps totaling approximately $30. Fees can changes, so you need to verify the current amounts on the official website colecturiadigital.com or directly with the Puerto Rico Department of State

If You Were Born Outside Puerto Rico

Besides what mentioned above, you will need one more document. Your Puerto Rican parent’s birth certificate (original) is a must. Note that it must be updates in post-2010 format.

If You Qualify Through One Year of Residency

This path requires additional proof. The Puerto Rican government accepts the following as evidence of residency:

Two utility bills (water, electricity, or phone) in your name covering 12 months at the address listed on the application

A valid Puerto Rican driver’s license or government-issued photo ID

An employment certificate or pay stubs from the past 12 months showing work in Puerto Rico

A copy of your most recently filed Puerto Rico income tax return (planilla) with the Treasury’s stamp

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

Confirm your eligibility. Look at the three categories to see if you qualify. If you are using the one-year residency path make sure you have all the documents that show you have been living there for a full 12 months.

Gather your documents. You need to have the original documents, not copies, when they are required. If any of your documents were given to you on the mainland, you need to check, if you need to get them translated or get an apostille before you can send them in.

Complete the official application form. You can get the form, from the Puerto Rico Department of State website at estado.pr.gov. Make sure you fill it out completely and correctly.

Pay the required fee. You can buy the revenue stamps you need from the Puerto Rico Treasury’s payment portal. Check the website colecturiadigital.com to see how much you need to pay and what the codes are because these can change.

Submit your application. You can do this in person at a Puerto Rico Department of State office. You can send it in the mail. It usually takes a weeks or a few months to process depending on how many applications they get and if your application is complete. If your application is not complete it will take longer, so make sure you check it carefully before you send it in.

Request an apostille if needed. If you plan to use the certificate abroad, such as for a Spanish citizenship application, you will need an apostille. This can be requested from the Puerto Rico Department of State at an additional cost – verify the current apostille fee at estado.pr.gov before budgeting.

How This Fits Into a Post-Move Checklist for Mainland Relocators

For people moving from the mainland to Puerto Rico, especially under Act 60, the citizenship certificate is not your first priority. It cannot be. The one-year residency requirement means your earliest possible application date is 12 months after establishing domicile on the island. Use that first year to build the residency documentation trail that the application will eventually require.

Make sure the utility bills are in your name from the beginning.

Getting a Puerto Rico drivers license will help when you apply for the citizenship certificate and you need it anyway because of Act 60 rules. You have to get it within 60 days of moving to the island.

Also file your Puerto Rico income tax return for your full year on the island. This will show that you really live there. Start collecting all these papers and keep them organized.

After one year you can apply for the citizenship certificate. This is one of the many things you need to do after you move. You also need to update your voter registration and check that you are doing everything you need to do for Act 60. You need to look at your IRS Form 8898 to see what you need to do.

Things That Can Slow the Process Down

Outdated birth certificates. Birth certificates that were given out before July 1, 2010 are not accepted. Getting a reissued certificate from Puerto Rico’s Vital Statistics Registry takes additional time. Build this step into your planning if there is any chance your birth certificate is outdated.

Utility bills not in your name. This one is common. Especially common for new arrivals who sublet furnished apartments or move in with family while they find permanent housing. When you relocate, make sure you are the one whose name is on the utilities.

Incomplete submissions. If you forget something, like a revenue stamp or a signature or if you submit a photocopy of the original, the Puerto Rico Department of State will not contact you to fix it. They will just send it back and put it on hold.

Florida has long been one of the most popular places for people to move within the United States. The reasons vary. Some are looking for job opportunities, others find lower taxes appealing and many just want to enjoy warmer weather. Whatever the reason, hundreds of people are still moving to the Sunshine State every day. Knowing the real figures behind these migrations can help you plan a more realistic move, estimate what to expect if you move to one of America’s fastest-growing states.

Current Migration Numbers and What They Mean

Florida’s migration patterns are flexing heavily. Florida appears to have entered a more stable phase of long-term growth. According to figures released by U.S. Census Bureau data which date back to April 2025 show that its population is now 23,379,261 residents, a figure which still represents growth but lower speeds than in recent times.

In the year from July 2024 to July 2025, Florida registered a total net gain of approximately 201,000 new residents. That comes to around 550 people per day on a net basis. This is a large drop from the pandemic-era like 1,000+ indeed daily. Even the character of this growth has undergone a sea change:

The leader is now international migration, accounting for 178,674 people

From 22,517 foreigners arriving in other U.S. States

This change signifies a substantial move. Florida’s net domestic migration figure slid suddenly from 183,646 people in 2023 and 310,892 in 2022 to just 22,517 in 2025. The transition brought Florida out of first place among U.S. states for domestic migration numbers and into eighth place. Americans have turned the tide: they are now choosing to stay put or move states like South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Peak year (2022) highlighted in blue

What causes this trend? Florida becomes less attractive to domestic migrants when costs of living rise, particularly in housing and insurance expenses. However, it remains a magnet for international migrants. A state that was once famed for its affordability is now losing that advantage.

Where New Florida Residents Are Coming From

From which states Florida’s new residents come signal everything from what kind of housing will be in demand to specific regions and the general character must prevail in different communities.

Top Origin States

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (State-to-State Migration Flows) shows these states sending the most residents to Florida:

New York leads by a significant margin, with tax differences and cost of living frequently cited as motivating factors

California contributes a large number of relocations, often involving remote workers and retirees

New Jersey, Illinois, and Pennsylvania round out the top five origin states

Georgia and Texas contribute notable numbers despite being relatively close geographically

Key Insight:

The bulk of newcomers to Florida come from high-tax Northeastern states. This pattern also largely determines where metropolitan regions will grow the most, with South Florida a natural dumping ground for many New York state migrants and the Tampa Bay area drawing from an even geographically wider base.

Not all of Florida is growing at the same pace. Understanding such regional differences will aid in planning for your particular move and having a better sense of what the housing inventory looks like, as well as pricing.

The Villages, an enormous retirement community in Central Florida, has continued to see the highest growth rates of any metro area in the country. But this is one set of demographics and housing types, which does not apply to most of the working-age relocators.

Landlords and property managers will likely demand a lot of documentation. Competition for desirable rentals leaves many asking to see proof of income at 2.5 to 3 times the monthly rent, as well as references and credit checks.

Now obviously with Florida being the best place and one of the top popular destinations, it creates an inherent imbalance in moving. There are more trucks coming into Florida than leaving it. This affects prices and availability in certain ways.

Shifting from Northeastern states to Florida, as you might guess, costs less than making the trip in reverse because companies want to fill their trucks that are heading south. Peak season is May through September when prices and demand are at their highest. Book 8 to 10 weeks in advance if you can, especially during the summer months. Winter relocations allow for greater flexibility with a 4 to 6 week lead time usually required. Other moving companies give discounts on direct to Florida routes in order to balance their fleet.

Warning:

Be careful that the compensation offered by a moving company is not too low for moves in Florida! Some degree of discounting is legitimate based on route economics, but if fares offered are too cheap it can indicate less-than-reliable operations. Before you hire, visit the FMCSA website, where you can verify any interstate mover’s USDOT number.

Timeline Considerations

Budget for a longer overall move timetable than you anticipate. Between the competitive housing, the need for permits in many Florida municipalities and any potential HOA approval processes, it’s likely you may need 60-90 days from your initial decision to be actually settled in.

Practical Steps for Moving to Florida

This is how to handle the logistics as one of the numerous daily arrivals.

Step 1: Research your intended area thoroughly. In different parts of Florida, cost of living, job markets, and lifestyle vary dramatically. Jacksonville and Tampa have housing that costs less than in Miami or Naples. If at all possible, visit before committing.

Step 2: Nail down housing before locking in your moving date. This is something that the competitive market demands. If you are renting, in many cases expect to pay first month, last month and security deposit upfront.

Step 3: Obtain early multiple moving quotes and share as much information as possible. Ordering quotes 6-8 weeks prior to your desired delivery date are ok, more time is preferable, especially in summer months. For out of State moves, confirm companies are licensed by FMCSA. Provide as many details about what needs to be transported as possible.

Step 4: Prepare for building access, and document everything ahead of time. There are many Florida condos, gated communities and apartment complexes that require coordination before you even move. Book the service elevator 2 to 4 weeks in advance (some buildings charge $200-$500 for move-in reservations.)

Step 5: Revise your Florida paperwork. You are required to get a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a resident (Florida DHSMV). Timeframes similar to those for vehicle registration shall also apply.

Step 6: Consider Florida’s specific housing costs and limitations. Both hurricane insurance, flood zone designations and HOA rules impact many Florida properties. So include these costs in your budget and when you are deciding where to live. Insurance deserves particular attention. High state of turmoil Florida’s property insurance market is in deep trouble, with average homeowners insurance premiums approaching $10,000 a year as of 2025, which is three times higher than the rest of the U.S. combined (Insurance Information Institute). Flood insurance, in flood zones, ranges from $800 to $2,500 or more per year. You will want professional estimates when in the process of purchasing a new home.

Note

When requesting quote be honest about the details that will impact pricing such as an inventory list with number of approx boxes, flights of stairs at both pick-up and delivery location, availability of elevator and size limitations if any exist, walking feet from truck parking to your door (the shorter the better), any large/heavy items that must be moved using special equipment. Long carries over 75 feet usually come at an additional cost of $75 to $150.

The Financial Reality of Florida’s Growth

Many relocators are attracted to Florida by the lack of a state income tax. The overall cost of living, however, has risen significantly due to population growth. Property insurance rates climbed about 40% in many areas from 2022 to 2024. And property taxes, while long-time residents enjoyed a cap under the Save Our Homes provision, will start at full assessed value for new buyers.

Newcomers are often totally taken aback by these costs when they project out their Florida housing budget. Insurance alone, in the coastal areas, or flood zones and region like this, can easily add another $500 to $800 per month on top of your housing costs.

Is Florida’s Growth Sustainable?

Florida’s growth rate seems to be slowing somewhat from the breakneck pace of the pandemic years. Problems with housing affordability and insurance costs eventually limit some in-migration.

However, Florida’s main attractions are still in place. Can the numbers now coming into focus be sustained–no state income tax, a great climate and practically full employment? Most demographic predictions still put Florida’s rate of growth above average through 2030, with the potential it could become the third most populous state in a matter of years.

For all of these reasons, if you are considering a move to Florida this means continued competition for housing and services, but at the same time an active job market plus new infrastructure being built in most metropolitan areas. Research where you are moving to within the state, budget for Florida’s particular costs, and co-ordinate your move logistics well beforehand.

When you choose to book your move can make a difference of many hundreds of dollars in Charlotte. A high-demand day compared to a slower season could be the difference between 10% or 30% off what it might cost you to move.

However, it isn’t simply a matter of choosing any weekday that appeals. Choosing the least expensive day requires an understanding of moving company pricing, what segments demand in Charlotte needs to be split into and how against that practical constraints such cost considerations can be balanced.

This guide describes the factors which affect average move rates from place to place, and how these relate to time of day, day of the week and even the season in Charlotte, North Carolina.

How Moving Companies Price by Day and Time

Most moving companies in Charlotte don’t charge different rates depending on the day of week. Instead, pricing variations arise from availability, advance-booking windows and discounts offered during slow periods.

Here’s how it works. Movers have fixed overhead costs: trucks, insurance, warehouse space, personnel. Their variable costs are essentially all labor costs. When demand is high, many movers find it easy to book their schedule full: there’s no need to negotiate with them at all. When clients don’t want mover services (demand drops), prices often go lower than normal, or else companies offer discounts in order to keep employees working rather than sitting idle.

Local moving activity in Charlotte mirrors both its own population growth and the mix of corporate relocations, university moves and residential changes. Charlotte added 23,423 people from July 2023 to July 2024, bringing the population to 943,476. It was the sixth fastest – growing city of all those with more than 500,000 residents by population gain (U.S. Census Bureau via WCNC). This growth keeps demand strong most of the year, but still brings out patterns in changing trends.

Midweek Days Tend to Cost Less

The least busy days for moving in Charlotte are, as a rule, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. People prefer weekend moves because they don’t want to take time off.

Then there is a late week demand level that causes prices to rise, so put off your move until Tuesday or Wednesday. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), moving midmonth and midweek can help you avoid the highest price. Tuesday and Wednesday are cheap days for moving for the same simple reason that there are less customers available at this time. Every industry publication shows that if you want to save money on your move, then you should hire movers during times when they are least busy: in the middle of their work week.

The discount is not always substantial, it might be 10% to 20% off or mainly a matter of better reception and easier scheduling. Some companies have specifically advertised mid-week specials, others continue at the same price everyday but are more open to negotiation if time permits on their schedule.

Tip:

If you need the freedom of some afternoon hours to guarantee every move that is made has an adequate time allocation from a local point of view in Charlotte, ask about starting on a weekday. Crews finishing a morning job will sometimes have leftover hours at a reduced rate rather than returning to their homes.

Seasonal Patterns in the Charlotte Moving Market

Charlotte’s moving demand follows predictable seasonal cycles, though the city’s growth has compressed some of the traditional slow periods.

Summer (June–August)

Very High

Minimal

Peak season due to school schedules and corporate relocations

Fall (September–November)

Moderate to High

10–20%

Demand drops after Labor Day but remains steady

Winter (December–February)

Low to Moderate

15–30%

Slowest period, especially mid-January through February

Spring (March–May)

High

Minimal

Market picks up as weather improves

January and February are typically the cheapest times to move. December can match that, but the holidays screw up timing for both customers and carriers. The best rates are often available just after New Year’s Day, when demand is low and businesses want to make a solid start to a new year.

Charlotte-Specific Timing Factors

Charlotte moving demand, however, is affected by various local factors which are not necessarily matched by national trends:

University Schedules: UNC Charlotte begins classes on August 18, which means that its fall 2025 move-in period ranges from August 13 through August 17. This creates a mini-peak in mid-August. May also sees increased activity as the academic year ends.

Corporate Relocation Cycles: The banking and finance community both tends to make significant moves, most of them concentrated around quarter-end dates.

Weather Patterns: Rarely is there severe winter weather in Charlotte, but from time to time storms cause operations to be completely closed down. Late spring affords the best chance for consistent conditions.

Monthly Timing Within Your Target Period

Even within a given month, certain days tend to be busier than others. This creates opportunities for savings.

First and last days of the month (lease turnover creates high demand)

Better Options

Mid-month weekdays (10th through 20th, excluding the 15th)

Days immediately following holidays when others resume work

Any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday during off-peak months

Booking mid-month, around the second or third week is typically the cheapest period to move. At this time, fewer of Britain’s four million renters are planning their moves. That means greater flexibility in terms of scheduling from both local and interstate moving companies, and lower pricing across the board.

What “Cheaper” Actually Means in Practice

There are many different ways to save costs when you time your move right. It is important that each idea is discussed so that the actual benefit can be disentangled.

Straight rate cuts

Some companies expressly charge less per hour on some days of the week. This is the most direct saving.

Enhanced negotiating power

When one is booking in a slack period, a client has more say. Companies might cancel fuel overcharges or diminish minimum hour requirements.

Locating preferred mover

In the busy season, you are often just assigned any team. In slow times, a bit of deliberation and some trade-offs may allow you to choose a crew with high ratings.

Reduced time pressure

Crews aren’t rushing to get to the next job during slow periods.

Limitations of Timing-Based Savings

Not everyone can capitalize on weekday or off-season moves. Consider these constraints:

Work schedules may not allow midweek moves

Lease dates often dictate timing

School calendars affect family moves

Coordinating with buyers or sellers in a home sale reduces flexibility

Weather risks increase during the cheapest winter months

The potential savings needs to be weighed against lost wages from taking time off, hotel costs if timing doesn’t align perfectly, and the stress of a more compressed transition.

How to Find the Actual Cheapest Day for Your Move

Obviously, there is no universal scheduled day for any aspect of commercial moving. Each person has to identify the cheapest day of the month to move from his own situation

Step 1: Get quotes for more than one date. Ask for at least three days stretched over a two-week window to be estimated. Most reputable Charlotte movers provide free estimates

Step 2: Ask specifically about discounts. Many companies offer unadvertised midweek or off-peak rates. Simply asking can produce options that are not shown online.

Step 3: Check availability first. If a company has no availability on your preferred cheap day, they must be open on the days they offer. Start by confirming who is actually open.

Step 4: Compare total costs, not just hourly rates. A lower hourly rate with a 4-hour minimum may cost more than a higher rate with a 2-hour minimum in heavy traffic.

Step 5: Book early. For off-peak dates, booking 2 to 3 weeks in advance typically captures any discounts. During peak season, plan on 4 weeks or more to nail down your moving dates.

WARNING:

Be cautious of rates that seem dramatically lower than competitors. Extremely cheap quotes sometimes indicate inexperienced crews, inadequate insurance, or hidden fees which will show up later. The FMCSA recommends verifying that any interstate mover has a valid U.S. DOT number and proper registration. Check that the company is certified by the North Carolina Utilities Commission for local moves within North Carolina.

Charlotte Neighborhoods and Timing Considerations

Where you’re moving within Charlotte can affect optimal timing in subtle ways.

Uptown Charlotte relocation often encounters restrictions on parking and advance reservation requirements for an elevator. Building managers are generally easier to deal with on weekdays. Weekend mover moves in high-rise and mid-rise buildings can mean additional waiting time on freight elevators.

Suburban areas outside of Charlotte, places like Ballantyne and Huntersville, generally offer fewer restrictions. However, in the older neighborhoods like Dilworth around Midwood’s Plaza people have narrow streets and limited parking–the least crowded time for such a move to be made is not close of business Friday but rather mid-week when competition for space seems minimal.

Making the Final Decision

The cheapest day to hire movers in Charlotte is most likely a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday in January or February, ideally mid-month and away from holidays. However, the actual best day for your move depends on your flexibility, the size of your move, and which companies serve your specific route.

Start by identifying which dates work for your lease and life circumstances. Then get quotes across those options. The difference between a peak Saturday in June and a quiet Wednesday in February could easily be $200 to $500 for a typical local Charlotte move based on reported industry savings of 10% to 30%. For interstate moves, the savings scale up proportionally.

The effort to research and schedule strategically usually pays off, but only if the timing works for your broader situation.

Choosing to move to New York or North Carolina from the other isn’t about finding an objectively better state. Rather, it is all about matching your needs with radically different ways of life. New York State is one big conurbation with cities and towns replacing the old country. It is one vast cultural infrastructure, high-density living environment very often conducive to remarkable earning potential. But, this residence is only for those wealthy enough: costs are high here. On the other hand, North Carolina offers space and affordability but no city rhythms except in some of its biggest urban centers.

This comparison covers: housing, jobs, taxes, climate and the environment you are coming in contact with every day.

Cost of Living: The Primary Driver

The gap in economic conditions between these two states sets the pattern for your every other decision. New York’s median home price stands at about $508,000, but this statewide figure hides extreme regional variation. In New York City median prices run up to more than $808,000 (Zillow). One-bedroom flats in Manhattan go for an average of $4,500 a month, with Brooklyn around $3,200 (RentCafe). Upstate cities like Buffalo or Rochester are considerably less expensive, with median home prices around the $200,000 mark.

North Carolina’s median home price is about $338,000 (Zillow). Raleigh one-bedroom flats average $1,400 a month. Charlotte runs a little higher, $1,600. Specifically, the median home value in Raleigh is about $431,000 (Zillow). Even in their most expensive neighborhoods, housing costs in North Carolina are significantly lower than throughout New York state.

Except for groceries, dining, entertainment, and services, the rest of your bills go up in New York. A $100 grocery haul in North Carolina might run $120–$130 in New York City.

Income and Employment Landscape

Finance, media, technology, healthcare and professional services form the basic framework of New York’s economy. Though dependable 2026 median household income data varies among reports, the state’s economic strength puts it in first place. High-paying industries are also widespread: finance, law, media, technology and medicine. Entry-level positions in high-paying fields usually start above $60,000 and experienced professionals typically earn six figures.

North Carolina ‘s median household income is about $74,000 per year (USAFacts). Key industries include banking (Charlotte is the United States’s second-largest financial center), biotechnology and pharmaceuticals (Research Triangle Park), technology and manufacturing. While salaries in North Carolina may be lower than those of New York, its money still tends to buy more.

A $90,000 salary in New York City leaves less disposable income than $70,000 in Raleigh after housing, taxes, and transportation. Ascertain just what is the salary range for your field of experience in both locations.

Important note for remote workers:

If you maintain a New York salary while living in North Carolina then things will change dramatically. Be sure to get it confirmed if you move, from an employer, whether they adjust their compensation on a locational basis.

Unemployment rates are similar. New York hovers around 4.3%, North Carolina about 3.6% (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Improvements in the labor market are happening in both states, but industries differ greatly.

Tax Burden Differences

New York has some of the highest state and local taxes in the nation. Taxes in the state range from 4% to 10.9%. The city itself imposes its own personal income tax on residents of 3.078% to 3.876%.

North Carolina brings leveling in nominal rates and stability. The 2025 state income tax rate was 4.25%, which fell to 3.99% for 2026 (North Carolina Department of Revenue). There are no county income taxes.

Sales tax rates in New York vary from 7% to 8.875%. North Carolina’s combined state and local taxes on sales range typically between 6.75% and 7.5%.

For a household making $100,000 a year, the tax difference can exceed $5,000 yearly when added together with state and local income tax. This gap is even larger at higher income levels.

Climate and Weather Patterns

Four seasons can be seen for New York, along with cold snowy winters and humid warm summers. It’s 27F to 39F on average in January in New York City. But snowfall differs greatly by region: Buffalo gets 95 inches annually, while New York City has about 30 inches (National Weather Service).

Mild winters and longer warm seasons characterize North Carolina. In Charlotte, the average January temperature ranges from 32F through 51F. Snow is rarely seen on the coast. The mountain areas of western North Carolina get colder temperatures and some snow.

Hurricane risk exists in North Carolina’s coastal regions. Inland areas like Raleigh and Charlotte experience tropical storm effects occasionally but rarely face direct hurricane strikes. New York faces lower hurricane risk but has experienced major storms like Sandy in 2012.

Transportation Requirements

This difference affects daily life more than most people anticipate.

In New York City most travel is by public transportation. Subways, buses, and commuter rails make it unnecessary to own a car for tens of thousands of residents. The monthly $132 MetroCard makes it possible to walk. Your commute might take an hour, but you’re reading or working on your phone instead of driving.

But in the north of New York City, including all suburban areas away from cities like Syracuse and Rochester, car dependence rises to unprecedented heights.

States of DudleyNorth Carolina is a car state. Rarely do Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham, and the rest of the towns have any kind of public transportation. You will take trips to work, buy groceries, go to hospital or meet friends by driving mileage in your mind (also wallet). Cars are a factor which eat up space and time or cash.

Warning:

Not having owned a car before or not having driven very much, the transition of moving to North Carolina will be a challenge. Insurance, petrol, and an automobile car all add to your monthly expenses. This kind of car lifestyle will restrict returns in ways not immediately obvious you won’t notice them until they’re life.

Average commute times are comparable. New York averages 33 minutes, North Carolina 24 minutes (U.S. Census Bureau). But the experience differs substantially. New York commutes often involve transfers and delays. North Carolina commutes mean sitting in traffic.

Lifestyle and Cultural Access

New York is full of cultural attractions. Museums, concerts, theaters, restaurants for every kind of food imaginable and events can always be found. Neighborhoods have their own identities and communities – indivisible cities! Whatever you may need is near at hand at any time of day.

Life is much faster. The crowd is always with you. Privacy is no longer a fact of life. Noise cannot be escaped anywhere.

North Carolina is sparer and moves at a slower pace. Cities the size of Raleigh, Durham, and Charlotte have scenes growing up around food, beer and cultural happenings; but everything here is on a smaller scale. You can’t live an unorganized life anywhere. You will have to plan ahead.

Outdoor recreation is equally distinct. New York has parks, the Adirondack Mountains, and Catskill hiking. On Long Island are its sandy beaches for swimming or reading about reef work in 1983. North Carolina offers you the western mountains, beaches along the coast and mild late fall early winters for hiking.

New York’s density makes contact with passersby almost constant, and with its many subcultures. In North Carolina you have to make a greater effort to build up a social network, especially if you are moving to that state without any connections at all.

Education and Family Considerations

New York’s public school quality varies drastically based on where you live. The wealthier suburbs offer excellent schools. New York City itself has traditional public schools that rank among the best in a national comparison, but on the whole city education is spotty at best. There are many private school options available to those who can afford them.

North Carolina’s public schools also feature variations by district. Wake County (Raleigh) and Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) have good reputations. The state invests less per student than New York, averaging $9,377 compared to New York’s $24,881 (National Center for Education Statistics).

The options for higher education are good in both states. New York has the SUNY and CUNY systems as well as many private colleges and universities. North Carolina has its distinguished UNC System, Duke, Wake Forest, and others.

Healthcare Access

New York fares better in hospital presence per capita and specialist availability, especially in New York City. Wait times for appointments can be long in a city with such dense population, though.

The major cities of North Carolina offer a solid healthcare infrastructure. Basic but comprehensive care can be had through Duke Health, UNC Health, and Atrium Health. Access is limited in rural areas.

Both states suffer physician shortages in certain specialties and regions. Check out specific providers in the region you intend to relocate to before you actually make the move.
